Vao Towers Fortress

Vao Towers Fortress (22, Vao küla, Väike-Maarja vald, Lääne-Viru maakond) – built with local limestone, this tower-fortress goes back to the 14th century. In 1986, the fortress was restored under the leadership of Vao sovkhoz. An exhibition on the 1st floor introduces the history of Vao Tower-Fortress and Manor, and the surrounding villages. The 2nd floor is a medieval dwelling that includes the washing area (place for washing hands), and dansker (dry toilet). The current furnishing imitates the pristine appearance of the room. The windows are of beautiful stained glass. The staircase in the wall leading to the cellar adds mysticism to the place. The 3rd floor is enlivened by paintings created by the artist E. Veermäe which shows locals in medieval garb. Admission: €2 (adult), €1 (seniors / children / students). Open for visits in advance only (via email: muuseum@v-maarja.ee)
